BUCS Outdoor Archery Championships 2018
(16-17th June 2018)
The final university archery event of the year dawns upon at the Lilleshall National Sports Centre again. Despite Bristol not sending any novices this year, it would be proved once again that BUCS Outdoors is the best university archery competition of the season!
- Saturday 16th
Saturday hosted the 1440 round, where every single archer competing would have their stamina and marksmanship ability to shoot 144 scored arrows would be tested over a long and arduous day of wind and rain, with frequent hints of sunshine.
Many of Bristol's archers saw new personal bests shot as they persevered through the tempests of Lilleshall, but a big congratulations to Will Armstrong for claiming a bronze medal on the 1440 day!

- Sunday 17th
Sunday was presented as the "fun day" amongst many attending archers, as there is no stress of claiming BUCS points and team medals on this day. The round shot was a WA 70 m, which consists of 72 scored arrows at on a 122 cm face at 70 m, which was inevitably followed by a seeded 70 m head-to-head round. Bristol's archers once again enjoyed the day with new club records being set, as well as some winning their head-to-head matches. However, Will Armstrong would strike again to claim a silver medal in the head-to-heads!

British Universities Team Championships (BUTC) - University of Birmingham
(25th March 2018)
UoB Archery sent experienced archers Jamie Diep, Claudia Tippett and Becky Martin to BUTC 2018, which saw Bristol engage in the competition for the very first time in the club's history!
The day began with muster at 11:00 and the day finishing at 18:00, with Birmingham A taking the BUTC 2018 title from runner up Warwick A.
The shooting was split into two halves. The first half consisted of a team qualification round, where each archer in a team would shoot a Bray I (30 arrows at 20 yd on a 40 cm target face) and the team's total points summed to give a team total. Bristol valiantly shot as a three on the line, which was shared with Nottingham A who gave a magnificent performance for the qualification round.
This resulted in Bristol earning a qualification rank of 24/32 with a team score of 657/900.
The second half was the elimination round, where each team was matched against a corresponding team based on their seeding from the qualification round. Bristol (24th seed) was matched up against Nottingham B (9th seed), who had shot a respectable 760/900 in their qualification round.
The elimination round consisted of whomever had the most hits on a Beiter Hit/Miss 60mm foam target at a distance of 20 yds. Bristol had managed to score a grand sum of 2 out of 18, whereas Nottingham B scored a mammoth of 12 out of 18 which had them joint 4th out of 32 teams in the first elimination round, based on number of hits.
Sadly, this meant that Bristol were no longer able to continue shooting for the rest of the tournament. However, it was a magnificent tournament and a brilliant way to end the university spring term.
Bristol will return to BUTC in 2019.

BUCS Indoor National Finals - Coombe Dingle Sports Complex
(11th March 2018)
The BUCS Indoor National Finals was again hosted at our very own Coombe Dingle Sports Complex, and consisted of a WA 18 seeding round to decide the archers who progress into the head-to-heads, which were also followed the WA 18 format.
Bristol Archers Becky Martin (Recurve Women) and Will Armstrong (Barebow Men) both shot in the first session of the day, beginning practice at 09:00 and finishing their WA 18 round at approximately 12:30. Later on, Jamie Diep (Recurve Men) began practice at about 13:00 and finished his WA 18 round at around 15:20.
Both Becky Martin and Will Armstrong shot strong enough scores such that they could qualify into the next stage, which were the menacing head-to-heads.
At the end of the day,
Becky Martin seeded 9th in the head-to-heads and eventually finished 7th out of 49 places.
Will Armstrong seeded 12th in the head-to-heads and eventually finished 8th out of 34 places.
Jamie Diep seeded 75th in the head-to-heads and eventually finished 75th out of 81 places.

Hosting the BUCS Indoor National Finals was not a task that could be easily achieved without the support of BUCS and volunteer helpers to aid in ensuring the event runs as smoothly as possible. So UoB Archery would like to say a big thank you to all the helpers, event runners and the University of Bristol for their support in hosting the BUCS Indoor National Finals at Coombe Dingle!
Also thanks to Alex Newnes and his friend (sorry we did not catch your name) whom helped to pack away the bosses at the end of the day, despite not being part of the helping team!
BUCS Southern Qualifier - K2 Crawley (24th February 2018)
K2 Crawley held onto hosting the BUCS Southern Qualifier yet again, where the competition consisted of a Portsmouth round.
The University of Bristol Archery Club all shot in the second session of the day, beginning sighter arrow at about 12:30 p.m. and finishing the round at approximately 3:30 p.m.
It was a day of ups and downs, as some of Bristol's archers did not shoot as well as they may have wanted, whereas some shot beyond expectations. Nevertheless, Bristol are still proud of its archers for competing and giving it a shot!

SWWU Regional 1 - Exeter (25th November 2017)
The first leg of the regional South Wales and West Universities (SWWU) league was hosted was the University of Exeter Archery Club. This also doubled as the first university archery competition of the 2017/18 season for the University of Bristol Archery Club. A Portsmouth round (60 scored arrows on a 60 cm face at 20 yds) was shot, which would have also been the first archery competition the novices will have been to!
This particular event proved to be a wonder as the novices showed their true potency by storming into the SWWU league with a first place finish in the first leg, with many claiming medals for themselves!
